Custom Knives
At Big River Forge every knife is hand forged from the highest quality materials on the market today. American Bladesmith Society - Journeyman Smith Charles Carpenter goes great lengths to hand forge and finish each and every blade, one at a time. There are no mass produced blades here. While we believe that if there is a modern technology that will result in a better overall blade for our customer we will use it, but as a general rule, we try to stay as traditional as possible.
Below are just a few of the custom knives created over the years.
How can we make your vision come to life?
San Mai / Damascus
The hand forged and finished blade construction on this fighter is very unique. The Japanese term San Mai roughly translates to three flat things. In the blade world it refers to three basic layers of steel, forge welded into one, with two layers on the outside separated by one layer in the middle. This blade takes that term to another level with the center layer being 203 layers of pattern welded steel (1075 and 15N20) and the two outside layers being mild steel (A203E) all forge welded into one homogeneous blade. The guard and collars are also the same Damascus steel while the spacers are copper and stainless steel. The handle is curly Hawaiian Koa wood.
